Summers are here … and so are the discussions on vacations. Well it goes without saying that it has to be the ‘HILLS’ in this weather and as a resident of Delhi we enjoy quite a few good options in either directions. Being a travel enthusiast myself, I have covered almost all of the mainstream hill stations and was really keen on exploring the less explored this time. So as soon my friends started planning for Dharamsala and McLeodganj in Himachal Pradesh, I quickly came up with the idea of rather visiting a quaint little yet a beautiful town close to them situated in the Kangra Valley itself – Palampur.
Palampur is easily accessible from Delhi through all the major transportation options –
Drive – Delhi to Palampur via NH44 (Quickest Route)
Distance – 500 kms approx.
Time – 10 hrs approx.
Fly – Delhi to Dharamsala (Closest Airport) > Drive – Dharamsala to Palampur
Time – 7-8 hrs approx.
Train – Delhi to Pathankot (Closest Station) > Drive – Pathankot to Palampur
Time – 20 hrs approx.
We chose the first option and drove a car ourselves for probable reasons like pocket friendly, comfort and the easy mobility across places with our own conveyance. Driving ourselves proved a very good decision as it gave us the flexibility to move around locations in our own comfort and certainly fell under our planned budget as well.
The next big question after “how to travel?” was “where to stay?” After a little research and few recommendations our focus was directed to the beautiful Norwood Villas located right in the middle of a tea estate. To be honest we were completely sold by just looking at the images of this property.
Norwood Greens are beautiful boutique villas that come with all the modern amenities and personalized services to suit your needs accordingly. The helpful and friendly staff ensures that your requests are fulfilled and you have a pleasant stay. Each villa (500 sq.yard) has 4 bedrooms with attached bathroom & in house lounge, dining, pantry, front lawn & rear lawn overlooking tea gardens & mighty snow covered Dhauladhar mountain ranges.
With all the upscale facilities it came down to a final most important question for a foodie like me – What kind of food would we be served? After a brief about the property and activities around the town, our housekeeper Sanjay popped the much-awaited question – What would you like to eat? Believe me when I tell you, this place actually prepared every dish according to our unique requests. The stay couldn’t have been better after enjoying our lavish homely meals.
Deciding things-to-do around the town is never a problem when you are staying at the NORWOOD VILLAS, as the staff will customize these for you according to your preferences. As we were in the town for just a couple of days, we could cover only few of these.
We got an opportunity to capture the beautiful sunset on the very first evening of our visit while trekking the hill top village of DHARED. As we climbed the hill slowly, the friendly and courteous villagers greeted us throughout our trek. Finally we reached the top at the right time to witness the beautiful sunset and spent some time there click pictures. The tiring first day was finally ended back in our luxurious abode with great music, hot food and a comfortable sleep in our rooms.
With a whole day to explore the town, our housekeeper Sanjay planned few sight seeing activities for us starting with a visit to the vast tea estates of Himalayan Brew. Apart from the walk across the tea gardens we also got an opportunity learn about the various teas and their production techniques. As a tea lover myself, I didn’t miss the chance of buying few freshly packed tea varieties from here. As the day was long, Sanjay packed us some sandwiches and kathi rolls to make sure our concentration was maintained exploring the beautiful town rather than worrying about the food.
Our second stop of the day was the beautiful ancient Shiva Temple located in the adjacent town of BAIJNATH. Situated right in the middle of a beautiful valley, this divine place is a must visit when in town. After spending some quality time in the parks surrounding this temple, we discovered GOMTI RIVER flowing many levels down in the valley and couldn’t stop ourselves from going there. The rest of few hours were then spent sitting on the banks of this chilled mountain river and the beautiful view of the whole valley. Finally the day was ended back in our villa with Sanjay and his team at our service. The second evening was again spent with amazing food feast with music and a comfortable night to rejuvenate us for our road journey back to Delhi.
Our visit to the beautiful Palampur town was a journey to remember, which was further complemented by the amazing stay & service of the NORWOOD VILLAS and I would surely love to visit here again.
